It acts exactly like a failed flashing tape on a window header, allowing corrosive elements to penetrate the seal. Once the moisture enters the hub assembly, it lowers the Dew Point of the internal grease, leading to emulsification. This is not unlike how a failed glazing bead allows water to sit against the secondary seal of an insulated glass unit. When the grease fails, the metal-on-metal contact creates microscopic pitting known as spalling.

How do you spot it? First, check for heat. After a long drive, safely feel the center of your wheel hub. If one is significantly hotter than the others, you have a friction problem.
